Art is life. As a teacher, making art is how we communicate, understand each other, become more perceptive, and ultimately elevate humanity.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My favorite art to create has the capacity to heal not only my own nervous system but also the lives of others. As an educator and future art therapist, I am interested in the connection between the mind, the heart, and our environment. The learning environment has always been a major part of my teaching philosophy. Over the last 8 years of being an art teacher, I have assisted in the build of outdoor classrooms in 3 different schools. Kids definitely learn better when the sky is the limit!
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration by honoring God for creating the beautiful natural world that we humans get the privilege of inhabiting. Indoors, when sitting in a man-made space such as my classroom/studio, I begin to imagine all of the artists, fabricators, designers, engineers, electricians, plumbers, craftsman, and construction workers responsible for these spaces. It is in those mindful moments when I reflect on why. Conclusively, I’m inspired by God’s gift of continuing creation through human hands.
What would you do with $25,000?I would use half of it to connect with Raquel Chapin Stephenson, founder of Creative Aging Solutions, to help transition my aging relative in Puerto Rico into a care facility that suits her love for art and nature. Creative art practices are vital coping mechanisms especially in aging adults who are navigating through the hardships of memory loss. Money leftover would be used to supplement my SVA tuition and dream of giving back by becoming an art therapist.
