Ramon Carty

Paper is the only safe house for a tongue that knows arson, they drowned us in the Atlantic, so I learned to breathe fire.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Raw, visceral free-verse poetry; the kind that weaponizes personal and collective grief, that refuses to look away from state violence, diaspora, the ugly and Black survival.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find it wherever the official story starts to lie, in the friction between survival and witness, In my own body and others. Eyes that hold entire histories. Blood that refuses to be metaphor until you force it to be.

What would you do with $25,000?

I’d rent the room they swore poetry couldn’t afford. Turn it into a dojo. Circles, not rows. Teach the youth that verse is weapon and salve. Run workshops for the forty-year-old who thinks the page closed on them. Build a curriculum so rigorous the academy has to recognize the craft, not just the credential. $25,000 won’t buy a yacht. It buys legitimacy. Space, permits, microphones, time. Proof for the next generation that art is work, therapy, and legacy. All three. Professor of this. On paper
