As an empath, I experience intense emotions. The canvas is a space where I can put my emotions rather than becoming overwhelmed by them.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Starting a project is always a gamble between disaster and brilliance. Every piece has a story behind it- Usually about an intense moment in time. Together they create a special resonance. In that connection, I find a sense of belonging. I enjoy finding that place where experiences shift to shared understanding. I aim to create art that connects people... across all barriers.... and in the simplest ways .... it's the ones that do this and turn out brilliantly that are my favorite.
Where do you find inspiration? When I experience something intense, I process my thoughts & calm my nervous system through painting. I simplify complex life events into a single still image, which brings a sense of equanimity and belonging. While I am inspired by intensity, I am motivated by the serenity that comes when a piece is complete. Painting a personal experience—turning it into shared understanding in the midst of the storm—is visceral.
What would you do with $25,000?There is a massive difference between painting a picture of the peace I desperately want & painting it from a place where I actually own that serenity. By winning this, I wouldn't just be winning a contest, I'd be gaining the resources to close the gap between canvas and real life. I could move from observer documenting the storm to a person actually standing on solid ground. I would finally be able to feel the peace and stillness I work so hard to illustrate.
