Creating art helps me express things I can’t always put into words. It’s where my emotions, memories, and intuition make me come to life!
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I work primarily in encaustic, using heated beeswax mixed with pigment, and also work separately in resin, along with mixed media and alcohol inks. Each material brings its own quality, allowing me to create depth, texture, and movement. My process is intuitive. I begin with a feeling, color, or sense of movement rather than a set plan. With encaustic, I build slowly, layering and fusing wax with heat to create softness and dimension.
Where do you find inspiration?I get asked where my inspiration comes from, and the truth is… it isn’t just one place. It comes from home. From Alarka. From the feeling of being somewhere quiet and real, where everything slows down and you can finally hear yourself think. It comes from life, the hard parts, the healing, the moments where you’re not sure who you are anymore and you’re trying to find your way back. It’s in the layers of that…the emotions I carry, the things I don’t always say out loud.
What would you do with $25,000?My 34-year-old niece suffered a brainstem stroke in November of last year. While she is cognitively aware, she is currently unable to communicate, essentially locked within her body. We are working to get her the specialized equipment she needs to communicate with her family again, but the cost is significant. Helping her find her voice and reconnect with the people who love her means more to me than I can put into words.
