Rochelle Jahdi Durkee

I create miniatures that spark smiles and memories. The buildings I handmake from scratch are inspired by movies I love and grew up on.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Miniatures, Dioramas - made from scratch from the faux ground up. I've been an artist ever since my father let me mix his paints (and using too much of them) to discover how to create different colors. It's my favorite art in the world - miniatures, because I see the smiles on people's faces as the pieces bring them into another place or back into a time of nostalgia. I get to play God and create tiny worlds and spaces as I see fit, and I love it. Life is hard enough, I enjoy making people smile

Where do you find inspiration?

Mostly from books, movies, and retro TV shows. Things that spark that creative need to make it - from buildings you see in movies we love to tiny sculptures of ghosts you can adopt (They're not real in case you wondered like a recent 8 year old asked me at an Art Market) to tiny paintings and drawings. If it can be made in miniature, I most likely will love to make it. I've taken inspiration from things like an old attic from the 1980's to a building from Harry Potter. Inspiration is everywhere!

What would you do with $25,000?

The money would be a LIFE-ALTERING event. I've wanted to go out and make art full-time, but reality is I can't without funding first to get me started and able to quit my day job. I dream about this DAILY, and you would see so much gratitude from me to recieve the very tool I have been waiting for to be able to make my art, to make people smile, and to do it before I'm too much older. I'd invest in more markets, tools, and supplies. And most of all, it would be fuel to my creative fire.
