My docupaintings express the hybrid nature of my Latino migrant experience. I create, I belong, I connect with my ancestors.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
When I have a dream, I take a photograph of that dream and then in an intimate conversation with my higher self, I trans-mutate that image with AI, and then print my new awakened dream in black/white and wheat paste it to a hardboard and I sand it down, as it if had crossed the desert, worn by centuries of caravans, and I begin the alchemy of oils and accidents, my hand once a camera, now a brush, I go dumpster diving at construction sites and make my frames, that is my favorite art.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in the invisible made visible in my dreams, in the sound of laughter, in the way fire burns and the way a daughter let’s go of a balloon or a bull rider prays to San Juditas, in the vision of a woman stirring with a spoon the size of a broom disappearing into the steam of a cauldron of churipo, in the way a tree can just stay put for so long and breathe the air into matter, the ever lasting memory of my first kiss, that feeling you get when you know you’ve been here before.
What would you do with $25,000?I will paint 3 murals, in collaboration with the participants in my docupaintings. One, in Durham NC, with the Azteca Dancers who claim the streets as their creative home because that’s all they can afford. The second, in Cheran, Michoacán with a community of bull riders who decided not to be trapped in el Norte because they wanted to live free. The third in.the mountains of Guerrero, with my friend Jesus the Bear who returned to start a school of indigenous dance for the children of his town.
