A grain of sand and a continent share the same geometry. So do cities and coastlines. Snowflakes and leaves. I make art out of that.

Receive Text UpdatesOnly mixed media handles the complexity of what I want to explore. Satellite imagery, collaged roads cut from vintage road atlases, and layers of acrylic reveal the self-similar patterns hidden in cities, coastlines, and waterways. What happens when self-similar disturbances disrupt our interpretation of form? What do these disturbances look like? Drawing on the Hudson River School's concept of the Sublime, I use Luminist techniques of light, dramatic scale, and bleached-out effects to find out.
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration began with physicist Richard Taylor's research into fractal patterns in Jackson Pollock's paintings. That led me to Mandelbrot's Fractal Geometry of Nature and decades exploring self-similarity in the landscapes around me. I grew up in Connecticut and its waterways, coastlines, and terrain remain a constant subject. I'm also inspired by collaboration. For commissions, clients bring me places that matter to them, which forces me to make the unfamiliar familiar.
What would you do with $25,000?I would dedicate time and resources to expanding my current series, A Tale of Two Cities. These are diptychs pairing cities with the same name on different continents. Sparta NJ and Sparta Greece. Syracuse NY and Siracusa Italy. Clients bring me places they care about and I pair them. As always, the fractal geometry of places around the world turns out to be consistent across continents. There's a lot more territory to cover, and this award would give me sustained studio time to cover it.
