As a Moroccan-American woman, I create so girls in the diaspora can see the beauty of our culture—and themselves within it.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My practice is rooted in painting, but extends across textiles and sculpture. I’m interested in working with traditional materials from the diaspora—such as red clay and wool—as a way to build a visual language that connects my ancestral heritage with my lived experience. Through this, I explore ideas of place, memory, and cultural continuity.
Where do you find inspiration? My work is deeply informed by the stories of the women who came before me—my mother, aunties, sisters, and grandmothers. I’m drawn to the balance of strength and softness they embody. Recently, I’ve been researching Amazigh women warriors, exploring themes of resilience, lineage, and the presence of women in spaces of power and resistance.
What would you do with $25,000?This support would allow me to further develop my studio practice and realize my next solo exhibition. It would also enable me to initiate a community-based program centered on providing resources and creative opportunities for young women of color, fostering access, visibility, and the ability to visualize their dreams.
