I love creating art. It fulfills my purpose, helping people connect to their ancestors, each other, and God.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My favorite art is anything that carries a story. I do a lot of sculptural design and love working with wood for its natural beauty and spiritual qualities, carving pieces people can connect with. Inspired by my Māori roots and my dad’s carving, I create story-based ukuleles, guitars, and traditional weapons. I’ve also been exploring stone and granite, applying the same principles. No matter the medium, my goal is to share deeper stories through meaningful craftsmanship.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in nature because it carries truth. I’m also inspired by my ancestral roots in Aotearoa, New Zealand, throughout the Pacific, and parts of Europe. As I continue to experiment and learn, I find myself becoming more spiritually connected, which opens another source of inspiration in the way I create.
What would you do with $25,000?If I won $25,000, I would reinvest it into my existing carving program to expand its impact, creating more opportunities for local kids here in Hawaii so that this art form isn’t lost. I’d also build an online program to reach and teach people around the world so it can continue to grow.
