Art is my therapy, I would not be here without it. I create to anchor myself and to honor those who have helped me to keep going.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I do a lot of photorealistic works from the references I take, and then I change it with the elements and symbols that make it more than just a picture to me. It has to tell a story. I work with charcoal often, but I love to use oil pastel and blend the colors. I take photos of what I find in the woods, as well as what I can make with my hands. The work you see here are prototypes of what I will make in the future if I’m able to be supported as an artist.
Where do you find inspiration? There is a disconnect between what is in the mind and the reality I live in. I draw the intrusive thoughts in order to take a look at them more objectively, only then can I decide what is actually real, and how I truly feel. When I do feel too weak to go on, I think of those around me that have suffered so much more. I’ve learned from them that true strength is choosing to embody empathy in spite of how cruelly life may treat you. They’ve inspired me to keep creating no matter how hard it gets.
What would you do with $25,000?I had to drop out of college for medical leave and when I returned I no longer qualified for any kind of federal aid. With the money, I could have my debt forgiven, and could continue my education with the fresh start I was denied. I could pursue art which is my dream. I want to do what makes me happier than anything, which is to put hard work and sweat into creating what doesn’t yet exist. The attention I bring to myself I want to use as a platform to inspire others to find peace by making art.
