Quarter-Finalist

Sophia Taylor

I've been creating, in mixed media, since I could hold a pencil. It's like breathing, it makes me feel alive and human.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I try not to limit myself. I really love combining and experimenting with different mediums. I do my best to see myself as a storyteller and to create with what I believe best serves the story. That said, in terms of enjoyment, I truly love charcoal works. I love the ability to instantly wipe away entire world that you have created. It takes away my need for constant perfection and really allows me to try new things.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration more in the way that I choose to look at things rather than the things themselves. I love art, and find constant inspiration in books, films, paintings, architecture, sculpture, music, and beyond. But if I choose to look at the world the same way that I look at art, I find inspiration everywhere. In people, foods, plants, animals, conversations I overhear, clothes that I like, and I even find inspiration in the philosophy of seeing the world in that way.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would expand the multimedia platform I am currently building that explores the philosophy behind why we create art. It combines my mixed media work and philosophy with that of other artists. This would allow me to grow it into a consistent and impactful platform and space for artists like myself. I would be able to access said artists, equipment, and events to use my art to talk about and to artists and their need to tell stories. It creates a space for others to create as well as myself.
