Art grounds me, empowers me, and helps me uplift marginalized voices through vibrant, mixed media work inspired by women artists of color.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My favorite type of art to create is multi‑media design because it allows me to experiment with different materials and techniques to form one cohesive piece. I love expressing symbolic meanings throughout my work, adding small details that reflect different parts of my identity and experiences. Multi‑media art gives me the freedom to explore, layer, and communicate my ideas in creative and meaningful ways.
Where do you find inspiration?I take much inspiration from female artists of color who use their artistic talents for advocacy, like Frida Kahlo, who gained fame through her artwork due to her involvement in the Mexican feminist movement, & Mickalene Thomas, who takes away societal norms that Black women should not be seen or heard, or simply sexualized. Her use of different mediums to create this change inspires me to do the same; to change people's lives, the way they think, and how they feel.
What would you do with $25,000?With $25,000, I would support my art education at Morgan State University. As college funding grows harder to access, pursuing a degree can feel uncertain. As a Black woman, I see education as both personal & historical. For generations, Black people were refused access to learning & punished for seeking knowledge, all because others feared the power that education could give them. This opportunity helps ensure that I can continue the journey they were never allowed to take.
