I love messy, thought provoking pieces, acrylic and pen and ink. I especially love non traditional canvases. One of my favorite pieces was painted on a sheet of corrugated metal which was formerly a part of a family’s shack home in Guatemala that I visited while volunteering. I wanted to draw from and about meaningful parts of real lives and the impact of the seemingly mundane.
Where do you find inspiration?I’m inspired by the people and experiences around me. I love to travel and I’m constantly challenged by perspectives that shatter my worldview. I’m inspired by art of all forms (dance, music, food, film, writing, tactile, paint, pottery, poetry) that challenges me and causes me to pause and think. I’m also inspired by pieces that tell a clear story of hope and redemption even through brokenness.
What would you do with $25,000?I’m 23 and completely self taught. I have long wanted to pursue art forms full time. If I were given the honor of receiving the prize I would want to use it to further my own professional training in the arts and then use those skills to bring arts opportunities to impoverished communities nationally and internationally. I have dreamed of working with at risk youth to draw out talent, skill and hope through creativity.
