I create as a form of expression, but also to share cultural memory, diasporic identity, and joy.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I love mixed media art. There is something almost magical about different artistic forms coming together in harmony within a single piece, expressing layers of ideas. It can be complex and profound, yet appear simple and light. I appreciate how art can connect with us all, meeting us where we are.
Where do you find inspiration? My great-grandmother, Isabelle, was a textile and sculpture artist whose creative dreams were never fully realized. Though I only knew her as a young child, she was the embodiment of love to me, and her legacy lives in my work. I draw inspiration from music, history, and the gardens and graffiti of the South Phoenix community that raised me. This is all cultural memory. I love sharing things like this in my artwork through historical portraiture, textile processes, and calligraphy/grafitti.
What would you do with $25,000?If awarded $25,000, I would expand Mahogany Matriarchy, a mixed media portrait series that explores lineage and Black womanhood. The funds would support the purchase of materials, studio time, and textile processes such as embroidery, as well as documentation and exhibition development. Additionally, I plan to offer workshops in South Phoenix to foster community dialogue and use this platform to raise awareness about sex trafficking.
