Art is my release valve, how I clear away spiritual crud. Regardless of why I begin a piece, I always end with fresh optimism and energy.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Anything that allows me to experiment and be wrong because I learn more from the mistakes I make than anything else. I paint abstracts but lately, I've been trying to create creatures, too. Whatever I do, my goal is to tell a story. Whether or not others understand isn't important. They just need to be able to tell that there is a story. My favorite is when someone shares what they see in my art with me--like one woman who looked at my paint swirls and asked, "Why so many penises?"
Where do you find inspiration?Other artists, surrealism, music, cave art, children's art, graffiti, folk art, outsider art, and anything that escapes the confines of beauty or leaves me wondering--as does overlooked minutiae. For example, for 30+ years, I've seen a new picture in the cracked faux marble tiles in my bathroom every time I look. Things half seen in the dark, spilled things, and mistakes are also fertile ground.
What would you do with $25,000?First, I would turn my garden shed into a workspace: buy actual art supplies (sorry Dollar Tree), and tools, and take classes.; next, buy a good camera and lighting so I can post better images; then, extend my workspace and make it welcoming, especially for seniors. For years I've wanted to open a salon where others can experiment, collaborate, show, or share art whether visual, written, performed, or just drop by to shoot the breeze with other artsy folks.
