A famous artist once said “If I could say it in words, I wouldn’t need to paint.” I can’t remember a time when I was not creating art.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
It is hard for me to select just one media. I love painting, drawing, textile work, and ceramic sculpture equally - selecting just one would be like picking my favorite child! I live on the land of my ancestors, and every day I am grateful to be able to create art that shows this beautiful area.
Where do you find inspiration? My indigenous ancestors were here in Monterey when the first Europeans landed here. My mixed racial heritage gives me a unique perspective on how our similarities are much more profound than our differences. I am truly blessed to be able to walk the same paths as my great-great grandparents and see the sunrise and sunsets on the same mountains and ocean they saw. I am also inspired by the diversity of the community here, and I love learning about other cultures - it all shows up in my art.
What would you do with $25,000?I would buy more art materials for my students! (and maybe a few for myself). I teach art to middle school students and it’s the best job in the world. The challenges with this age group is totally outweighed by their inquisitive and determined interests in developing their skills as artists. Although I am their teacher, I learn from them every day.
