My most rewarding work comes from portraits created in charcoal; I love the challenge of capturing expression and personality using light and tone not color. But for therapeutic and self-expression, I enjoy ink bleeds. It’s a beautiful relaxation tool to lead the medium but watch it take on a path of its own—together you and your tools create something you hadn’t even thought of yet.
Where do you find inspiration?As with most artists, I do find nature ever inspiring, but I am truly drawn to the human face and how the soul peers through in a glance, the tilt of the head, the set of the jaw, etc. When combined —the expression of someone in the natural setting that feeds their soul—I have my perfect subject.
What would you do with $25,000?This prize will be perfect for my retirement next year. We’re moving to Huntsville, AL where I already have plans to purchase a small city transport bus to transform into a mobile art studio and gallery. The studio will be for Pop-up kids art classes, introducing major art and artists as I guide them in creating art projects to get them familiar and hopefully excited about art for years to come. The truck will double as a gallery for local art shows/festivals to promote and sell my own work.
