I work with black ash as a way to stay in touch with our ancestors. A family art form that has been passed down through many generations.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I love working with black ash as it's a natural resource. There are many art creations you can make as it's a versatile wood. I love to make baskets, hats and art pieces representing our culture, such as the strawberry plant, this plant is connected to a vast system of leaves, runners and roots, like our human heart that is connected to the organs and parts of our body. Art pieces such as this keeps me grounded and connected with our ancestors.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration from nature and its various colors, from birds to flowers, I can see beautiful color patterns that i can mimic onto a basket, hat and/or plant. I also get inspiration from our ancestors who has passed this artwork down many generations, once again, keeping me connected
What would you do with $25,000?If I were to win this award, I would like to give back to the community and also use funds to travel to other communities to share and teach our artwork, and hope to meet elders who have knowledge in this art of black ash basketry, to learn what knowledge they have as it is a dying art.
