Yalet Yanar

I paint so women can find solace in my art. I depict the religious origins of misogyny and urge viewers to sit with their inherited beliefs.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite type of art to create is representational narrative portrait paintings. I’ve always loved depicting the human figure and mythological/religious stories. In my art I combine the two passions along with an added modern feminist perspective highlight and critique how these classical narratives have been used to spread and justify misogynistic beliefs and behaviors. I most often use oil paint, but I also like to glaze-paint onto my ceramic vessels/sculptures.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find a lot of inspiration from my peers, witnessing another person’s artistic process, their concepts, and just hearing their day to day opinions opens up one's mind for so many new ideas. Being in spaces with other artists is always great. From a technical standpoint, I am greatly inspired by neoclassical artists; I constantly look back at the old master’s works for guidelines in color, composition, and technique. One of my main artistic goals is to master the human figure just as they did.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would use the money for graduate school to get my masters in fine arts and expand my portfolio. This summer I’m doing a residency at the New York Academy of Art, and I’d love to get a shot at their MFA program too. While waiting for application season to come back around I’d spend some of the prize money on an art studio. While I currently have plenty of paintings and just enough space to create some more, I need a professionally equipped studio space to expand my ceramic and sculptural work.
