Mixed media which includes an acrylic painting that is incorporated with architectural salvage from the deep south coastal and New Orleans area. I “quilt” the painting and n to repurposed copper screen windows with beading wire, then i incorporate quotes, scriptures, and lyrics in the frames along with random findings which are incorporated in the screen around the painting. All of these components represent the people, nature, and culture of the area.
Where do you find inspiration?
All of the southern area of the United States is living history… from the landscapes, the cabins on the bayous, the delta swamps, the stories of the people, and especially the our great musical artists. Also, my father was a self taught artist and I grew up walking with him in the outdoors where he would point out the “unnamed” colors that people overlook. Like the reflections of color in a black crow that is really no black at all, but a combination of deep hues of purple, green and blue.
What would you do with $25,000?
Well, I have been a full time artist with no financial safety net for 21 years. The funds would go to upgrading my studio to make it more artist friendly, travel for a self designed artist retreat, replenish my paints and brushes, and hopefully put a little bit of a nest egg away for the inevitable rainy day.
